WeatherShield® now has a "big brother".....WeatherShield HD®

Developed primarily for intense sun environments and long-term storage, WeatherShield®HD provides UV protection, repels water, blocks dust, tree sap and bird droppings. In addition, it is breathable to allow moisture and heat to escape. The base material for WeatherShield HD is high-performance solution-dyed UV resistant woven polyester with a 300 denier fiber construction that is approximately 40% heavier than regular WeatherShield, resulting in almost double the tear and tensile strength.

The patented finish is an immersion process that uses heat and pressure to force special formula polymers and UV inhibitors INTO the fibers (see illustration). These special polymers block moisture and dirt, while still maintaining breathability!

Durable woven polyester is finished with a patented immersion process that makes the fibers impervious to moisture, dust, dirt, bird droppings, tree sap and grime. This “super fabric” provides outstanding protection against most natural elements and can be used for storing vehicles outside or indoors. The strong, woven polyester base fabric results in a cover that is lightweight and more compact than multi-layer non-woven fabrics.

• Protective Outer Layers – Both outer layers are bi-component spunbond, using sheath core technology. Each individual fiber has a polypropylene inner core for strength, with a polyethylene wrap for softness. The light gray color doesn’t attract heat and the fabric is treated with UV inhibitors for extended outdoor use.
• Micro-Porous Film Middle Layer – The barrier layer is breathable film, a proprietary stretch-film technology developed exclusively for Kimberly-Clark. The film is stretched, and then subjected to a chemical process that creates microscopic holes smaller than droplets of water or dust, yet large enough to allow moisture vapor and heat to escape. This helps reduce the bulk of the non-woven fabric, while providing an almost solid barrier against the elements.
• Soft, Paint-Protecting Inner Layer – Another bi-component spunbond, this one made with polyethylene and nylon. The combination results in an exceptionally high strength-to-weight ratio, with the “soft touch” necessary for today’s water based paint finishes.

Sunbrella® fabric from Glen Raven Mills has long been recognized as the choice for marine covers, sail covers, Bimni tops and deck enclosures. Softened for automotive use, Sunbrella® is designed to block damaging UV from reaching the vehicle’s exterior and interior. If protection is needed from intense sun exposure, this is the fabric!

This storm-shield type fabric was originally introduced by Covercraft in 1992. They felt it offered many features and benefits that were unique (at the time) for outdoor fabrics, but due to some quality issues, the fabric was discontinued. Thanks to recent improvements in production technology, Covercraft has re-introduced Ultralon because it's a good value for a woven fabric cover. Ultralon uses very strong UV-resistant woven knit polyester for the base fabric. The finish process involves placing an ultra-thin layer of breathable acrylic foam on the underside of the fabric and coating the foam with cotton flocking fibers while it completes a curing process. The result is a very moisture-resistant breathable fabric, with a soft finish for paint protection. The layer of foam provides a high degree of dust protection and also provides extra cushioning against dings.
